Method 5 - Connecting Words and Phrases

Connecting words can help the reader follow the train of thought and show how points relate to each other. This can show cause and effect, etc. Connecting words and phrases include nouns and their verbs, etc.

For example, In Ephesians 6:11-18 Paul is giving instruction about the Armor of God:

" 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places .

13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; "

(Eph 6:11-18 KJV)

In verse 11 I might highlight ‘put on’, ‘armor’, and ‘able to stand’. In verse 12 I might highlight ‘wrestle’, ‘ principalities’, ‘powers’, ‘darkness’, and ‘wickedness’. I would want to show that they go together, so I might draw a line from one word to the other, showing they are linked.

Notice also that this passage gives a list of items that is called the Armor of God. Another way of marking items in a list is to number them. Simply write a number over each element and circle or underline the main point to show what the list is portraying. For example, you could circle “armour of God” in verse 13 and write the number 1 above “girt”, 2 above “breastplate”, 3 above “shod”, 4 above “shield”, and a 5 above “helmet”.
